Child Therapy

Helping children understand their emotions, regulate their feelings, and thrive

Is your child struggling?

Big emotions can feel overwhelming—for children and for the parents who love them. Perhaps your child struggles with anger that erupts without warning. Maybe they're anxious, withdrawn, or finding it hard to make friends. Or perhaps behaviour at home or school has become a daily battle.

You're not alone. And your child isn't broken—they just need help understanding what's happening inside.

At The Feelings Teacher, we help children develop emotional intelligence: the ability to understand their feelings, manage their reactions, and build stronger relationships. It's like giving them a superpower for life.

How Child Therapy Works

Our sessions are designed to be safe, supportive, and, most importantly, effective. Here's what to expect:

Step 1 | Building Connection

Therapy only works when a child feels safe. That's why we start by building trust.

We meet your child where they're comfortable—at home, at our office, or even a favourite park. Through play, conversation, and our "All About Me" book, we get to know who your child really is: their interests, strengths, worries, and dreams.

No pressure. No interrogation. Just a genuine connection.

Step 2 | Understanding the "WHY"

Behaviour is communication. When children act out, there's always a reason underneath.

We help your child explore what's really driving their feelings and actions—not to blame, but to understand. Together, we uncover patterns, triggers, and the unmet needs behind challenging behaviour.

This isn't about fixing your child. It's about helping them understand themselves.

Step 3 | Building Skills

Once we understand what's happening, we teach practical strategies that actually work:

  • - Emotional awareness: Recognising and naming feelings
  • - Regulation techniques: Calming down when emotions feel too big
  • - Mind-body connection: Understanding how feelings show up physically
  • - Self-compassion:Being kind to themselves when things go wrong
  • - Relationship repair:Making things right after conflict

Step 4 | Empowering for Life

Our goal isn't for your child to need us forever—it's to give them tools they'll use for life.

By the end of our work together, your child will have greater confidence, resilience, and the ability to navigate challenges independently. They'll understand their emotional landscape and know what to do when difficult feelings arise.

What make us different

work with family - the feelings teacher

We work with the whole family

Children don't exist in isolation. That's why we involve you throughout the process.

Sessions may include 15-20 minutes of parent feedback. We share what we've worked on, what's helping, and practical strategies you can use at home. Because the real change happens between sessions—and you're the one who makes that possible.

We go beyond behaviour

Traditional approaches often focus on stopping unwanted behaviour. We focus on understanding it.

Using Emotion Coaching, Restorative Approach, and neurodiversity strategies, we address the root cause—not just the symptoms. This creates lasting change, not temporary compliance.

OUR APPROACH

The Feelings Teacher Triad

Our method combines three evidence-based frameworks:

Emotion Coaching: Helping children understand and regulate their feelings through empathy and connection, not dismissal or punishment.

Restorative Approach: Repairing relationships and rebuilding trust after conflict—teaching responsibility and empathy rather than shame.

Neurodiversity Strategies: Adapting our approach to how each child's brain works—because no two children learn or feel the same way.

Together, these create a flexible, compassionate approach that meets your child exactly where they are.

Family Therapy &
Parental Support

You Don't Have to Do This Alone

Parenting can feel overwhelming—especially when your child's emotions or behaviour feel confusing, exhausting, or out of control.

You've read the books and tried the strategies. But nothing seems to stick. Perhaps you and your partner disagree on how to respond. Maybe you're exhausted from daily battles. Or you simply feel like you're failing.

You're not failing. You're just navigating challenges without the right support.

At The Feelings Teacher, we walk alongside parents, giving you the understanding, tools and confidence to support your child effectively whilst taking care of yourself too. .

When to seek support

You feel constantly overwhelmed – Parenting stress is affecting your sleep, relationships, or mental health;

Discipline isn't working – Nothing you try seems to change your child's behaviour;

Your relationship with your child feels strained – Constant conflict has replaced connection;

Family changes have thrown everything off – Divorce, relocation, or other transitions are impacting everyone;

You need help navigating the system – Schools, EHC Plans, SEND support all feel overwhelming;

Remember: Seeking support isn't giving up. It's stepping up for your family.

What parental support includes

parental support - parent mentoring - The Feelings Teacher

Monthly Parent Mentoring

One-to-one guidance (face-to-face or online) where we explore what's really going on beneath the behaviour, develop strategies specific to your family, and build your confidence as a parent. This isn't therapy for you—it's practical coaching to help you understand and support your child more effectively.

Ongoing Support for Therapy Families

When your child is working with us, you're part of the journey. We provide regular catch-ups, WhatsApp and email support between sessions, and practical strategies to reinforce what your child is learning at home.

School & SEND Navigation Support

We help you understand the SEND system, prepare EHC Plan applications, liaise with schools, attend meetings, and access specialist assessments. We don't just explain what to do—we help you actually do it.

The Emotion Coaching Approach

At the heart of our work is Emotion Coaching — a research-backed approach that transforms how you respond to your child's feelings.

Instead of: "Stop crying, you're fine!" "Go to your room until you can behave!"

Emotion coaching teaches: "I can see you're really upset. Tell me what happened." "Your body feels angry right now. Let's work through this together."

This approach validates your child's feelings whilst maintaining boundaries, teaches emotional regulation instead of suppression, and creates lasting change instead of temporary compliance.

Children whose parents use emotion coaching develop stronger emotional intelligence, better behaviour, and closer family relationships.

Understanding parenting styles

We help parents understand how their approach affects their child by balancing nurture (warmth, connection) with boundaries (structure, expectations):

Authoritarian
(high boundaries, low nurture)

Strict rules without emotional warmth. Children comply out of fear but struggle with emotional regulation.

Dismissive
(low boundaries, low nurture)

Strict rules without emotional warmth. Children comply out of fear but struggle with emotional regulation.

Permissive
(high nurture, low boundaries)

Lots of love but few rules. Children struggle with self-control and may escalate behaviour.

Emotion Coaching
(high nurture, high boundaries)

Warmth and empathy combined with clear expectations. Children feel safe, develop emotional intelligence, and thrive.

Our goal is helping you move toward emotion coaching—not through judgment, but through understanding and practical support.

How it Works

Step 1 | Initial Consultation

We meet to understand your family's challenges and what you're hoping to achieve.

Step 2 | Create your Support Plan

Together we decide what type of support fits best for your family.

Step 3 | Ongoing partnership

We work with you consistently, adjusting our approach as needs change.

Step 4 | Build your confidence

Our goal is for you to feel capable and connected—empowered in your own parenting.

Beyond Advice: Hands-On Support

What makes us different from parenting books or online courses?

We don't just tell you what to do—we help you actually do it.

Need to fill out an EHC Plan application? We'll sit with you and work through it together.
Confused by your child's assessment report? We'll explain it in plain English.
Don't know what to say in a school meeting? We'll help you prepare or come with you.
Tried a strategy but it's not working? We'll adapt it until it does.

This is partnership, not prescription.
