About Us

what you do - the feelings teacher

The Feelings Teacher provides specialist support for children, families and schools navigating emotional and behavioural challenges. Whether your child struggles with anxiety, anger, friendship difficulties, or neurodivergent traits like autism and ADHD, we're here to help them understand their feelings and develop the skills to thrive.

We provide support for:

The Feelings Teacher Approach

the feelings teacher approach

At The Feelings Teacher, our work is grounded in a unique and compassionate approach developed by Ines Gomes, combining three powerful frameworks: Neurodiversity strategies, Emotion Coaching, and Restorative Practice. Together, they form the heart of what we do — a triad that nurtures understanding, connection, and long-term change.

This approach has proven to be highly effective for children both in school and at home. It helps adults and professionals understand the “why” behind a child’s behaviour, while equipping them with practical strategies to respond in ways that build trust, confidence, and emotional resilience.

Emotion Coaching

Based on the work of John Gottman (1996), Emotion Coaching teaches children to recognise, understand and regulate their emotions. Rather than dismissing feelings or focusing solely on behaviour, we use emotional moments as opportunities for connection and learning.

Restorative Approach

Drawing from restorative justice principles, this approach rebuilds relationships after conflict. Instead of punishment, we focus on understanding harm, taking responsibility, and repairing trust—creating lasting behavioural change rooted in empathy.

Neurodiversity

Every brain works differently. We adapt our support to each child's sensory, cognitive and emotional profile—whether they have a diagnosis or not. Visual timetables, sensory tools, movement breaks, and communication adjustments all form part of our toolkit.

Together, these three pillars create a flexible, compassionate approach that supports children at school and at home—helping adults understand the "why" behind behaviour whilst equipping them with practical strategies to respond.

Who we work with

Families

(parents, carers, siblings)

Schools

(teachers, SENCOs, support staff)

Other professionals

(CAMHS, Children's Services, educational psychologists)

We're also proud to collaborate with trusted practitioners, including Olivia Rigby and Dr. Iona Bramati, ensuring wraparound support for every child we work with. By working together, we ensure early, relational, and meaningful interventions that have a lasting positive impact.

The Science Behind Our Work

According to Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory (2011), a dysregulated nervous system cannot access reasoning or empathy. A child who feels unsafe cannot "behave"—they can only react. That's why our work starts with safety and connection, not consequence. When a child's nervous system feels safe, their brain can engage with learning, problem-solving and relationship-building. Our approach creates that sense of safety through co-regulation, predictability, and understanding.
